A Place of Refuge Ministries – LifeWalk
June 13, 2009

On Saturday, June 13, 2009 the threat of rain didn’t stop over 200 people from enjoying what turned into a beautiful morning at A Place of Refuge Ministries Annual LifeWalk, hosted this year by Luther Memorial Chapel and University Student Center. Participants enjoyed Starbucks and Einstein Bros. Bagels, children’s activities and fellowship as they waited for the walk to begin. The 1.5 mile route took walkers, led by District President John Wille, through beautiful Shorewood. This included a segment on Lake Dr. where drivers honked and waved at the sea of blue shirted, balloon carrying supporters of APOR. Walkers handed out APOR brochures to neighbors as they made their way back to Luther Memorial for a wonderful lunch served by some of the scores of volunteers from the church who helped make the day possible.

Several moms being served by APOR participated in the days events. My favorite part of the day is that it allows our moms to see for themselves how many people from all over South Wisconsin are standing beside them at this difficult time in their lives. LifeWalk provides an awesome picture for them of Christ’s love in action.

Walkers came from across the South WI District including Twin Lakes, North Prairie and Howard’s Grove. Churches who couldn’t travel to the Milwaukee area “Strolled with us in Spirit”, adding to the record breaking total raised of $22,000.00. This includes supplemental funds provided through the Care Abounds in Communities Program of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans. Local chapters contributing this year were North Milwaukee, Co., Northeast Waukesha Co. and Southeast Waukesha Co.

Thank you SO MUCH to EVERYONE at Luther Memorial for all of your hard work and support…especially our chairman, Brenda Carlton and our committee members, Krisi Button, Marie Zimmerman, Jennifer Burfeind, Chris Amen, Rachel Ploetz, Paul Hessel, Chris Button, John & Diane Kretsch, Jerry Zimmerman Jim & Winnie Genthe, Tom & Sue Rebholz, Sandy Gabriel, Carl Swanson, Don Toll, John & Martha Galvin, Ben Wieting, Sarah Sagert & Jennifer Grasse.
